I like shattered retreat, but I tend to turn off defensive pacts since they don't really stop you , and if you keep attacking small, shattered nations like in russia, there's nothing anyone can really do to stop you, and once you're just big enough or taken down enough of the blobs, even the remaining world united can't stop you. If they manage to produce an army that can challenge your doomstacks, let attrition fix that. Maybe I'm not doing enough to destabilize them but empires like the Umayyad Caliphate in my 936 start seem unstoppable right now (maybe thats historically accurate, I don't know a lot about them).
